PTFE – or Polytetrafluoroethylene – is a synthetic fluoropolymer (a «plastic» of sorts) that is used in a wide variety of applications, the most well-known being a non-stick coating for frying pans under the brand name Teflon. In addition to PTFE’s countless other uses based on its non-reactive nature and low coefficients of friction, it has established itself as a beautiful, versatile and durable coating for tensile architecture applications. PTFE is most often used to coat fiberglass fabrics on stadium roofs, canopies, atriums and in other designs that go beyond the realm of traditional building forms.

For the past ten years, PTFE-coated fabric has proven itself a unique, intriguing architectural material. But it has its flaws. For example, fiberglass blocks a significant amount of natural light.


And PTFE coating can become compromised when folded and flexed, while the fiberglass fibers underneath lose their waterproof properties or even break.
